I think a lot of times we assume that if we like a celebrity, they'll make awesome relationship choices, and if things do go sour, they'll keep things private and we'll never hear any bad gossip. Like how Amy Poehler and Will Arnett have stayed super classy post-split. This is in contrast to couples whose members we never even liked in the first place (cough Robin and Paula cough), whom we pretty much expect to have a nasty split. But sometimes even if one or both halves of a celebrity relationship seem likable and mature, things can get bad. Bad as in cheating, bitter interviews, and possibly even a little crime.
Here are just a few examples of generally awesome celebrities who've faced some really ugly divorces or break-ups. They teach us that just because a celeb avoids drama when they're single doesn't mean they'll avoid it when they're attached… and even more so when they're unattached. Is there any hope for the rest of us?

I'd almost forgotten these two were even married, let alone that it ended so badly. Elisabeth recently did an interview where she called her marriage to Fred "traumatic." Fred has also admitted in the past that he was "a terrible husband." If Peggy Olson and an SNL great can't make it work, who can???
3. Sandra Bullock

Poor Sandy. Poor poor poor poor Sandy. When she and Jesse James first got married, it seemed extremely mismatched, but I figured since Sandra loved him he must be pretty great. Not so. Soon after Sandy won her Oscar in 2010, news broke that Jesse wasn't exactly faithful… not to mention those pesky photos of him giving the "heil Hitler" sign. But Sandy got through it and she says that thanks to her son Louis, she's in a great place.
4. Jennifer Aniston

I know picking Team Aniston or Team Jolie is so 2005, but I really was Aniston all the way. I'm willing to come to terms with the fact that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are in love and have babies and all the jazz, but I just wish the tabloids would allow me to. Not only was America's sweetheart presumably cheated on, and not only has her ex basically said their time together was a waste, but now every magazine cover is about her supposed feud with Angie and her crazy baby jealousy. Le sigh.
5. Courteney Cox

Now let's talk about Jennifer's co-star Courteney Cox and her divorce from David Arquette. David spoke to the media about cheating, and he checked into rehab in 2011. Luckily, for the sake of their daughter, they seem to be in a better place now, with Courteney still talking maturely about David. But for a while there I was like, "How could this happen to Monica?!"
6. Khloe Kardashian

Bear with me here. You might be like, "Why are you saying a Kardashian is likable? And why should their nasty divorce shock you?" But I'm not ashamed to say that I think Khloe is the best Kardashian and I actually quite like her. If you were to ask me a year ago which Kardashian relationship would last the longest, I would have said Khloe and Lamar Odom. But now, after some pretty awful allegations of drug use and cheating, they're getting a divorce.
7. Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathway is married now, but remember when she was dating that Italian businessman named Raffaello Follieri? And remember when he went to prison for money laundering, wire fraud, and conspiracy? This was before all the Hathahate, but even Anne's biggest detractors would have to admit that break-up looked rough.
8. Sophia Bush

Ah, young love! Isn't it grand? Until you get married and then divorced a year later and have to keep working on a TV show together. Awkward. There were rumors that Chad Michael Murray cheated, and Sophia recently said, "We were two stupid kids who had no business being in a relationship in the first place."
9. Eva Longoria

I don't remember specifically liking or disliking Eva Longoria back when she was married to Tony Parker, but I remember thinking they seemed like a pretty cute couple… until all that alleged cheating and sexting happened. Whoops.
10. Emma Thompson

Here's something you might not have known, depending on your age. Our favorite award show party animal Emma Thompson was married to Kenneth Branagh from 1989 to 1995. They made movies together and were both adorably English. Until that whole affair he allegedly had with Helena Bonham Carter. Dun dun duuun. Kenneth and Helena then dated until 1999. Emma recently said doesn't "hold on to" that experience, but it did help her for her role in Love Actually: "I've had so much bloody practice at crying in a bedroom." Sad face.
