They're one of the most famous couples in the world but Katy Perry and John Mayer have revealed their relationship had a perfectly ordinary beginning.

The pair, who have been dating off and on since 2012, enjoyed a simple dinner for their first date, 'just like a regular couple'.

While Katy, 29 and 36-year-old John are happier than ever right now, Katy admitted during a joint TV interview with Good Morning America that their relationship has been fraught, explaining: 'Relationships are kind of like riding a bull. You hang on for dear life.'

However, the couple admitted they were worried about how to act in the interview with a self-conscious John explaining: 'We don't quite know what kind of body language we're supposed to be exhibiting.

'You get too close it's a little too touchy feely and you get too far away and people say ''I don't see chemistry''.'

'The producer heard it and said why don't you get Katy to do it and my very first thought was you can't do that and then the more I thought about just the music part of it, it made perfect sense, even if I didn't know Katy, it would have made perfect sense. I went in the other room [and] called her phone.'

The lovebirds often turn to each other for advice when working with John explaining: 'I come in the studio and she plays stuff and I go [mumbled noises] and then I'll hear a melody, because she'll be writing something, and I'll be like, "Don't, don't, don't". 'And I'll go, "Come here, come here, come here, "I sang this into my iPhone while you were in here. Just check it out.'
