With each passing date on the schedule, it's getting harder and harder for the AGWSR Cougars to reach double digit wins. Stuck at six on the season with eight games remaining after Wedensday's trip to South Tama, the double-digit loss to the host Trojans made it perfectly clear what has to happen.

With everybody playing each other three times this season in the North Iowa Cedar League-West, Monday's varsity doubleheader in Grundy Center meant the visiting AGWSR Cougars could still get the best of the Spartans.

The end result at Saturday's West Fork Tournament in Sheffield was a collection of how AGWSR's season has gone so far. The Cougars played West Fork close until one big inning, then weather took away a chance at satisfaction in a shortened win against Belmond-Klemme.

  4. Derek Schipper lifted a deep flyball to center here. The sacrifice fly plated Jake Willems in a three-run third inning of a 4-3 loss to visiting Gladbrook-Reinbeck Tuesday night.

If there is one thing the AGWSR Cougars needed to clean up this year was fielding. After committing 112 errors in 24 games (4.6 per game), they went 5-19 last year. Through the first four games this season, it looked like they had-with just six miscues (1.5) in building a 3-1 record.

While it remains to be seen what the Dike-New Hartford Wolverines will do as the season progresses, the North Iowa Cedar League-East contenders laid waste to the visiting AGWSR Cougars on Wednesday in Dike. Of course the Cougars did help them a bit en route to a four-inning, 16-1 win.

  8. Jake Willems picked up a win in Saturday's West Fork Tournament. He also batted a run in in the win over Belmond-Klemme. AGWSR opened with a loss to West Fork and are now 5-9 on the season-equalling last year's wins.

The ebbs and flows of baseball are usually more subtle. A string of a couple runs here or there, a nice play with the glove sprinkled in. They were a lot more harsh Monday in Beaman as the AGWSR Cougars visited the BCLUW Comets and went home with a 12-8 and 3-6 split.

  15. Derek Schipper takes a lead at first base after reaching on an error. AGWSR fell at home to Grundy Center, 16-4.

  18. Brandon Johnson successfully reached second here on a fielder's choice against Grundy Center. He eventually scored the first of two fourth-inning Cougar runs, but that didn't help as the hosts fell 16-4 in Ackley Thursday.

AGWSR Cougar head coach Darwin Pfaltzgraff just wants his team to get better as the season goes on. Ultimately, a .500 or better season would prove to him that they had. After losing an early lead to Gladbrook-Reinbeck in Reinbeck on Wednesday and falling 9-4, Pfaltzgraff is still waiting for both.
