Maya Rodale, author of What a Wallflower Wants, checks in with fellow romance authors about their own wallflower moments.

Maya: Historical romance authors love to write about wallflowers — those shy, overlooked girls lurking on the perimeter of the ballroom — probably because we have our own real life experiences to draw from. Like all those wallflowers in our books, we also blossomed into brilliant and beautiful women who are swept off their feet by devilishly handsome dukes who murmur their undying love for us before a swoon-worthy kiss ...

Oh, wait. That's fiction. Some of it, anyway (I like to think the brilliant and beautiful part is true!). But here are some true, real-life wallflower moments of historical romance authors ...

Cathy Maxwell, author of The Groom Says Yes

I never had the chance to be a wallflower. I spent most of the time at school dances hiding in the ladies' room. It was safer than risk the possibility I might not be asked to dance — or worse! Being asked! Fear kept me in hiding. I mean, what do you say to boys? How do you act around them? And what if one of them takes your hand? Then what??? But I kept going back to those dances because the lure of the male is a powerful thing ... fortunately.

About The Groom Says Yes:

New York Times bestselling author Cathy Maxwell continues her dazzling series, The Brides of Wishmore.

He had a noose around his neck and a price on his head ...

Sabrina Davidson, dutiful daughter, avowed spinster, thought she'd secured a place for herself in Aberfeldy society — until her hard-earned acceptance of her fate is challenged by the arrival of Cormac Enright, earl of Ballin, trained physician, soldier of fortune, and convicted felon.

A prim and proper miss was the last thing he needed ...

Mac is determined to clear his name, but first he has to find the man whose testimony sentenced him to a hangman's noose. Of course, Robert Davidson is missing and protecting Mac is Davidson's daughter, the most entrancing, frustrating, beguiling, stubborn woman Mac has ever met.

And it doesn't help that he has already tasted her kisses. Or that he has found in her a passion for life and adventure to rival his own.

Mac has turned Sabrina's world inside out — but what will happen when he leaves?

Or will the Groom Say Yes?

My wallflower moment took place in the library during high school. The boy I liked was sitting with me (!!!) when a girl friend of mine came over to ask about a homework assignment. Then she joined us. Then we all started chatting. Then sparks started flying between my friend and my crush. I vividly remember sitting there, feeling quite// invisible, and both seething and marveling that you really could actually see// the chemistry between two people and watch as they fell in love. They dated for a year. And I used the experience to help me write romances where the invisible wallflowers get the guy.

About What a Wallflower Wants:

Miss Prudence Merryweather Payton has a secret.

John Roark, Viscount Castleton, is nobody's hero.

He's a blue-eyed charmer with a mysterious past and ambitious plans for his future — that do not include a wife. When he finds himself stranded at a country inn with a captivating young woman, a delicate dance of seduction ensues. He knows he should keep his distance. And he definitely shouldn't start falling in love with her.

When Prudence's dark past comes back to haunt her, John must protect her — even though he risks revealing his own secrets that could destroy his future.

As the only certified tomboy in a family with four daughters, you might imagine I had my share of wallflower moments growing up. But I wasn't precisely a wallflower. At least, I didn't know// I was a wallflower. Instead, I was oblivious (which is a much lovelier state of ignorance). With my too-short hair and tree-climbing skills, I guess I was what you might call an "accidental wallflower." But there comes a reckoning in every wallflower's life, and mine came in seventh grade. My family decreed that I would attend cotillion and learn the Southern manners I was sorely lacking. For two long years, I was forced to learn to serve punch. Hold my fork the proper way. Greet a boy and (*gasp*) complete a basic box step without treading upon his toes. Did this miraculous cotillion (also known as the Junior League Inquisition) turn me into a lady? Decidedly not. I still cut my hair too short and climb the occasional tree. But I am nonetheless grateful for that early glimpse into what other s considered proper behavior for a lady. Because now, at least, I know how to write about it in my books. :)

About Diary of an Accidental Wallflower:

The first irresistible installment in New York Times bestselling author Jennifer McQuiston's Seduction Diaries series proves that some secrets are too delicious to hide.

Pretty and popular, Miss Clare Westmore knows exactly what (or rather, who) she wants: the next Duke of Harrington. But when she twists her ankle on the eve of the Season's most touted event, Clare is left standing in the wallflower line watching her best friend dance away with her duke.

Dr. Daniel Merial is tempted to deliver more than a diagnosis to London's most unlikely wallflower, but he doesn't have time for distractions, even one so delectable. Besides, she's clearly got her sights on more promising prey. So why can't he stop thinking about her?

All Clare wants to do is return to the dance floor. But as her former friends try to knock her permanently out of place, she realizes with horror she is falling for her doctor instead of her duke. When her ankle finally heals and she faces her old life again, will she throw herself back into the game?

Or will her time in the wallflower line have given her a glimpse of who she was really meant to be?
